India's Carbon Credit Trading Scheme was officially launched in 2023. By March 2026, 490 companies were given legally binding emission targets, meaning they must buy carbon credits or face penalties. The market is set to fully launch by end of 2026. But right now, no proper marketplace infrastructure exists, farmers and villages who are actively saving carbon have no verified, transparent way to sell their credits, and companies have no trustworthy platform to buy them.
